Shani Akilah, a Black British Caribbean writer and screenwriter from South London, visited Kingsbury Sixth Form on the 27th November, to run a Creative Writing Workshop for Year 12 and 13 English and Media A Level students. Shani is a book influencer, served as a literary judge for the Nota Bene Prize in 2023 and holds a Masters degree in African Studies from the University of Oxford.
Ms Proposch, a teacher of English & Media Studies who supported her students during the workshop, shared her feedback: “Shani Akila's workshop for our Year 12s and 13s was fantastic. Her emphasis on using personal experiences as inspiration for creative writing was particularly useful. I really appreciated that she opened up to the students about the writing process and the effort required (before her work was finally published). This often differs from other writers, who attribute their success just to innate talent, rather than dedication and perseverance.”
