Competitions and Events

This month we have been busy hosting a variety of events including cricket, athletics, tennis and a new event added this year to the calendar after feedback from schools and students in the borough. Usually we only host events for schools to bring their best to compete against other schools in the borough, but a much needed B/C team football festival was added to this term's events to allow schools to access even more competitive football opportunities for their students. Themed around the Euro’s we partnered with Tottenham Hotspurs Global team to deliver the event supported by Kingsbury High School Leaders and Jason Roberts Foundation who kindly hosted us at the facility in Stonebridge Park.

So far this half term we have seen 712 participants across 5 different events at borough level.

West London Finals

As part of the wider SGO team across West London we hosted the West London finals at Brunel University on 13 June. The top two teams in athletics, rugby, panathlon, dance, hockey and football from each borough were invited to compete against each other. It was a lovely day with lots of great talent on show.

This year we also introduced a festival area for all participants to try a number of personal best challenges. This year this area was led by Kingsbury High School. We have received some great feedback about the overall day and in particular leaders who supported the various events.

Congratulations to the following schools for representing Brent in the respective sports: Byron Court, Ark Franklin, St Robert Southwell, Preston Park, Mount Stewart, Oakington Manor.

Lexus British Open

Through our partnership with the LTA we were pleased to be able to offer our partner schools the opportunity to take a group of students to watch and be involved in the Lexus British Open that will take place early next month. We hope all schools involved enjoy the experience and we look forward to hearing all about their day.

Path to Paris

In partnership with London Sport and Team GB we delivered a Path to Paris event connecting young people with local community opportunities. Partnering with local delivery organisations we showcased a variety of Olympic and Paralympic sports from table tennis to street dance to blind football, targeting those that are not active outside of school. We have 56 young people from Kingsbury High, Crest Academy and Uxendon Manor enjoy the event.

Young Ambassadors

We were lucky to have the Youth Sport Trust in school in the last week of term piloting a Young Ambassador programme with Sports leaders from Kingsbury High and Harris Lowe Academy Willesden. The group discussed and presented what they felt were the biggest social challenges that face young people getting active. They then designed and recorded short clips to advocate and promote the benefit and importance of physical activity.

Sports Leadership & Volunteering

Summer is invariably a busy period for leadership and volunteering, with an array of courses, events, and festivals underway. Our Year 12 leaders are in the process of completing their Leadership Skills Foundation Level Three qualification, which includes dedicating their time to assist various groups in becoming physically active. This term, they've been actively involved in delivering the West London Finals of the London Youth Games, Panathlon swimming at the Olympic Park, and the LYG Adapted Disability Festival at Gunnersbury Park.

Year 11 students returned post-exams to participate in our 'Introduction to Leadership' workshop. They were acquainted with the essential skills taught in the Level 3 course offered in the sixth form, including communication, problem-solving, self- management, self-belief, and teamwork. After two days, they applied these skills by leading Year 8 pupils. Many are now volunteering at local sports days to gain experience ahead of starting the Level 3 course in September.

Family festivals for local primary schools have engaged 570 pupils from Years 1 to 4 this term, with leadership provided by students from Years 7, 8, and 12. Additionally, Year 8 and 9 pupils participated in the 'Beyond The Baseline' tennis workshop and the Your:Time leadership program for girls. All these activities contribute to our students' confidence and skill development, which will serve them well in the future, while also positively impacting the lives within our local community and throughout London.
