Public speaking is a vital and important life skill. Our outstanding Debating Society helps our young people learn how to speak confidently and eloquently, through attending weekly debates on topics chosen by students.
In recent years, the Debating Society has successfully competed in:
Debate Mate
At Kingsbury Sixth Form, we run regular debating sessions which are led by a highly experienced Debating Coordinator. The purpose of Debate Mate is not only to give our students the opportunity to debate important topics, but to also better prepare them for higher educational study and the workplace. To do this, students are supported to improve a wide range of higher-order thinking skills, their teamwork abilities and cultivate leadership skills.
Informal Student-Led Debates
Out Debating Ambassadors also plan and run weekly debates at the Sixth Form. These well-attended debates take place at various stages of the year and are open for all to enjoy and contribute. Recent motions for these debates have included:
Competitions
Kingsbury Sixth Form has enjoyed success in debating competitions, both pre- and post-pandemic. Before the pandemic, our students were finalists in both the Cambridge and Oxford Union Debating Competitions. In 2022, our students competed in the Debate Mate Cup. The talented team, consisting of Year 11, 12 and 13 students, were crowned champions in this competition, testament to their hard work and perseverance.
What do the students say?
"Debating has helped me to become more involved in what’s happening in the world and able to consider own ideas and thoughts"
"I have enjoyed taking part in discussions and making friends with other like-minded students"
