Topics

Unit 1

Worth 24%

Physical systems

1hr 45 min written paper

  • Landscape systems (Topic 2: Coasts- studying inter-relationships between land, oceans and atmosphere to understand processes, characteristics and impacts on these landscapes and cycles, which shape them over time and create a number of issues when attempting to manage them)
  • Earth’s life support systems (Carbon and water cycles- investigating examples and case studies at a range of scales to understand the dynamic nature of landscapes and the water and carbon cycles, supplemented by quantitative and qualitative fieldwork opportunities)

Unit 2

Worth 24%

Human interactions

1hr 45 min written paper

  • Changing Spaces: making places (Studying the actions, interactions and spatial patterns of people in places, building a picture of how humans shape the world around them in a local, national and international scale. Studying a variety of examples and case studies of contrasting places to unpick the flows and connections that have made them the way they are)
  • Global connections: Geography of Human Rights/Migration (studying the way that global systems and governance has local consequences, including concepts such as inequality, interdependence, representation, identity and globalisation with qualitative and quantitative research methods supplementing study in this module)

Unit 3

Worth 32%

Geographical debates

2hr 30 min written paper

Choose two of the following topics:

  • Climate change (what are the causes and solutions to climate change? Can we fix the effects of climate change?)
  • Disease dilemmas (what global patterns of disease are there? Can we eradicate disease? Are economic development and disease type linked?)
  • Exploring oceans (how can use of the ocean be a threat and an opportunity? How will climate change affect the ocean? What is the future for oceans?)
  • Future of food (What are the threats to food security? How does this impact people? Can we feed the world in the future?)
  • Hazardous earth (what are the hazards associated with tectonic events? Can we mitigate this and allow people to survive hazardous events?)

Unit 4

Unit 20%

Investigative Geography

Coursework

Independent research coursework (on a topic of your choosing), which includes:

• extended writing

• innovation in investigating and presenting data

• self-directed study and • research techniques

• making synoptic links between the real world, geographical theory, the learners own research and the specification.

3 written exams (Units 1, 2 and 3) and independent investigation on a topic of the student’s choosing (coursework- work 20%)

Two compulsory field trips to undertake- one for physical geography and one for human geography. Students will plan and undertake the fieldwork and research for these components.

One coursework which is internally assessed (worth 20% of the final grade) on a topic or question determined by the student, to follow their own interests, curiosities or related to their intended field of further study.
